Spark Issue No. 13 was my fourth semester as a layout designer and art director for Spark Magazine, a completely student-run and funded fashion publication. This semester, I got the incredible opportunity to join the leadership team for Spark, meaning I get to lead the design team and shape the creative direction of Spark. Since this was my fourth semester in Spark, I had the opportunity to assume this leadership role because of my seniority but also because of the success of my spreads previously.
This semester I was given two of the most important spreads in the whole magazine, the first being a shoot done exclusively by leadership and some of Spark’s most talented photographers, models, HMUA’s, etc. This spread is all about the subtle art of mindfulness.
My second spread was the feature editorial of an interview with Ransom Ashley, an Austin-based artist and photographer. This story was one of my absolute favorites to design, because the message of the photography and interview really speak volumes for themselves, which allows the design be more like background noise instead of a prominent overlay. It taught me that when everyone does a good job, it makes my job a whole lot easier.
